This dress will self-destruct in 7 days

Sat Jun 7, 2008, 6:55 PM
06:07:08: Okay, so last Monday I was fired on my way out to lunch from my day job (I also have a night job). What does this have to do with sewing a dress? My time is suddenly my own, and my friend is getting married on the 14th. You thinking what I'm thinking Pinky? Time to take over the world, Brain? No, Pinky! The same thing we do every night: Try to sew a dress in a week!

Yeah, okay, my brain isn't normal right now. That's beside the point. I actually started this dress with 9 days to go, but I realized I hadn't made a mention of it here on DA. There are progress pics on my website, but suffice it to say I'm officially testing my sanity. I am making a sheer dress with a gathered front, gauged skirt, and perhaps a flounce around the bottom. I draped a full lining, cut it down to a half-lining, and draped the gathered bodice. The lining and the dress are separate in front, flat-lined on the side and back, and both secured with hooks and eyes. Of course, in actuality this is only partly complete. I've gotten the skirt cut and seamed, and the bodice is pieced and the waistband, armscyes, and neckline piped. I'm on to set the sleeves next. I cheated with the sleeves and took the same pattern from the sheer blouse I had made a few years ago. I love those billowy sleeves, and there's absolutely no point in fixing what ain't broken.

I am debating over using the blue wide-awake hat from the same ensemble as the white blouse mentioned earlier. The dress mostly white with brown stripes, with little red flowers all over. I'm not so sure about the blue hat. If I get this dress done with any time to spare, I might take my other wide-awake frame, slap some cotton voile on it and a pretty red ribbon, and call it a hat.

I don't have to worry about my shoes though. Robert Land is kindly supplying me with some of his newest model, the American Walking Shoe. Thanks, RL!
